The Port of Tanger Med continues to pursue its ambitious projects. Soon a third terminal built in this port will be in service. The aim is to make this port more competitive and to strengthen its capacity to accommodate ships of all kinds. Tanger Alliance, the concession grouping of Terminal 3 container (TC 3, capacity of 1.5 million containers Equivalent twenty feet (ETF), with an 800-metre wharf linear) is preparing to enter the scene this January 2021, according to the Moroccan daily L’Economiste.
Initially scheduled to enter service in late 2020, this third container terminal at the Port of Tanger Med will be launched in January. Several tests have been carried out.
A finalization of tests
Citing sources close to the Port of Tanger Med, the daily reports that the dealership has just completed a series of tests at the Tanger Med port complex. A few days before the end of 2020, the TC 3 was passing one of its last tests.
As a reminder, the Marsa International Tangier Terminals S.A (MINTT) consortium in charge of the construction, manufacturing and management of TC3, is 50% owned by Marsa Maroc, Contship Italia and Eurogate International at 40% and the shipping company Hapag Llyod, the world’s No. 5 containerized sector, to the tune of 10%.
The port of Tanger Med, the first in Africa
Africa-wide Tanger Med is the continent’s leading container port, followed by Port Said in Egypt in 52nd place with 2,989,897 ETF processed, followed by Durban in South Africa in 65th place with 2,699,978 ETF processed, the Port Authority said.
Only the other African ports of Lagos in Nigeria (1,500,000 ETF) and Mombasa in Kenya (1,189,000 ETF) include this world ranking.
Now the 20th largest in the world, Tanger Med was launched in 2007 and has since expanded with the two Tanger Med II terminals, TC3 and TC4. With 9 million ETF containers, the Moroccan port outperforms the Spanish port of Valencia (5 million ETF) and looks to the top of the world rankings.
