La noyade est l’une des principales causes de décès chez les enfants et les jeunes âgés de 1 à 24 ans. Aussi à l’occasion de la journée mondiale de sa prévention, le 25 juillet, l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) a lancé un appel.
Le monde célèbre chaque 25 juillet, la journée de prévention de la noyade. Le thème retenu cette année invite la communauté mondiale à « faire une chose » pour prévenir ce fléau. Selon l’OMS, elle est la cause de plus de 236.000 morts chaque année. Elles sont souvent liées à à des activités quotidiennes et routinières, telles que la baignade, la collecte d’eau à usage domestique, les voyages sur l’eau à bord de bateaux ou de ferries et la pêche.
Six mesures pour prévenir la noyade
« Chaque année, dans le monde, des centaines de milliers de personnes se noient. La plupart de ces décès peuvent être évités grâce à des solutions factuelles et peu coûteuses », a déclaré le Directeur général de l’OMS, le Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Les Six mesures préconisées par l’organisation pour prévenir la noyade sont simples. Il s’agit d’installer des barrières contrôlant l’accès à l’eau ; former les gens au sauvetage et à la réanimation en toute sécurité ; enseigner aux enfants d’âge scolaire les compétences de base en natation et en sécurité aquatique.
En outre, on peut aussi offrir des garderies supervisées pour enfants ; établir et appliquer des règlements sur la sécurité de la navigation de plaisance et des ferrys ; et améliorer la gestion des risques d’inondation. Ces mesures peuvent se décliner en différentes actions.
Actions à entreprendre
Pour une bonne implémentation de ces mesures de prévention de la noyade, l’agence onusienne a donné des exemples d’actions concrêtes à mener. Aussi, entre autres, elle invite les particuliers à partager des conseils de prévention de la noyade et de sécurité aquatique avec leur entourage.

Ils peuvent aussi s’inscrire à des cours de natation ou de sécurité aquatique, ou soutenir des groupes locaux de prévention de la noyade. Elle invite également les groupes à organiser des événements publics pour partager des informations sur la sécurité aquatique, lancer des campagnes de sécurité aquatique.
Quant aux gouvernants, ils peuvent élaborer ou annoncer de nouvelles politiques, stratégies, lois ou investissements en matière de prévention de la noyade. Introduire ou s’engager à soutenir des programmes de prévention de la noyade à l’échelle nationale ou internationale.
